    Gaza: paying the price
    Civilians are counting the cost of the 3 week conflict in January 2009, which claimed more than a thousand lives and dealt a heavy blow to the economy of Gaza, a territory already shattered by decades of conflict and deprivation. The international community pledged billions of dollars in aid, but restrictions on essential raw materials going into Gaza will have to be lifted if Palestinians are to rebuild their lives.

    International humanitarian law: a universal code
    Is international humanitarian law up to the job of protecting the people affected by modern-day armed conflicts? This film looks at the poor security conditions frequently confronting the civilian population, the fact that people often have to flee their homes, hostage-taking, the dangers posed by cluster munitions, and the work of preventing and punishing war crimes. It tells us the basic rules of the law and reminds us that respecting them is everyone's responsibility.

    Micro-economic initiatives: handbook
    ICRC micro-economic initiatives are tailored to individual beneficiaries and designed in close consultation with them.     Direct participation in hostilities

    After six years of expert discussions and research, the ICRC has published the "Interpretive Guidance on the notion of direct participation in hostilities under IHL," which aims to clarify the meaning and consequences of direct participation in hostilities under international humanitarian law (IHL).     War surgery: working with limited resources in armed conflict and other situations of violence

    Humanity in war: frontline photography since 1860
    Since the second half of the nineteenth century, photography has played a fundamental role in opening the world's eyes to the horrors of war. During the same period, the ICRC has worked to alleviate the suffering of victims of armed conflict around the world. In a new book, Humanity in War, the ICRC traces the history of war and its humanitarian consequences from the American Civil War to modern-day conflicts with striking images that bring to life the pain and anguish of men, women and children who endured the hardships of war.

    The ICRC's pricing policy for communication products
    In accordance with its mission statement, the ICRC is committed to promoting and strengthening humanitarian law and universal humanitarian principles. One way in which it does this is by making its resources as widely available, and inexpensive, as possible. However, because it is accountable to its donors, the ICRC has also to try to recover its production costs.
