Gaza: chaos as conflict intensifies
The situation in Gaza since the Israel Defense Forces launched their ground offensive on Saturday night has become both chaotic and extremely dangerous. It is difficult for the ICRC to move around and assess the urgent humanitarian needs created by the continued shelling and bombing, and by fighting on the ground. The ground attack has forced a number of people in the north of the Gaza Strip to flee their homes.

Gaza: ICRC medical team still banned from Gaza
For the second consecutive day, Israeli authorities have refused to allow an ICRC emergency medical team into Gaza. The ICRC had notified the authorities of the team’s arrival in advance, but they have been awaiting authorization to enter the Strip since Friday morning, even though the Erez crossing between Gaza and Israel has been open for other humanitarian workers and foreigners to leave the Strip.

Gaza: fear reigns as air strikes continue
Israeli air strikes continue to hit Gaza, resulting in further casualties, including women and children. The streets are almost empty, with the population too frightened to venture out. Most only leave their homes in an emergency, or to find food. The majority of shops remain closed, including bakeries.

Gaza: humanitarian needs increase despite aid
With air strikes continuing throughout the first night of 2009, more casualties have been arriving at Gaza hospitals. According to the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS), seven civilians were killed, including one child, and 17 were injured. Further damage was reported to homes and administrative buildings, including hospitals. This morning, the streets of Gaza were largely empty.

Gaza: hospitals struggling to cope as fighting intensifies
Amid fierce fighting the ICRC is moving swiftly to assist Gaza's hospitals, which were overburdened even before the sudden influx of casualties. The priority is to get more medical supplies to the hospitals immediately. The first ICRC truckloads of supplies entered the Gaza Strip today.

Gaza: ICRC calls for restraint as hospitals overwhelmed by scale of emergencies
Geneva / Tel Aviv / Jerusalem (ICRC) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is extremely concerned by the mounting number of casualties inside the Gaza Strip, following a series of air strikes by the Israel Defense Forces. The strikes have killed at least 275 people and left more than 950 wounded, according to Palestinian health officials. Zimbabwe: Disinfecting homes to counter cholera
