Kenya, Djibouti & Tanzania: Facts & Figures January - December 2022

In all three countries, ICRC continued to work hand in hand with national Red Cross and Red Crescent partners to advance its humanitarian activities. The joint focus of this collaboration largely remained on restoring and maintaining family contact for people displaced due to conflict and violence; for migrants in Djibouti with Djibouti Red Crescent Society (DRCS), and for refugees in Tanzania with Tanzanian Red Cross Society (TRCS) and in Kenya with the Kenya Red Cross (KRCS). 

We also worked with prison authorities to promote humane living conditions for people deprived of freedom in Kenya. In Kenya, regular programs continued with the aim of strengthening the resilience of violence-affected communities living in the coastal and north-eastern region, and working with prison authorities to ensure humane conditions for prisoners.

Thematic engagements also continued with government officials, security forces, religious and community leaders, universities, and the media to foster support for ICRC's work and to raise awareness about international humanitarian law (IHL) and ensure its integration domestically. Supporting these dialogues regionally, the ICRC hosted a seminar with government officials from eight eastern African countries on the implementation of IHL, co-hosted a global workshop with Kenya Defence Forces on Partnered Military Operations (PMO) for military commanders from 17 countries, and organized all-Africa IHL moot court competition for university students from nine countries.

Through its Regional Logistics Support Centre (LSC) together with a diverse team of regional thematic specialists based in Nairobi, the ICRC continued to deliver humanitarian aid and to directly support ICRC operations in different parts of Africa and beyond.

In May, after 30 years of being located on Denis Pritt Road in Nairobi's Kilimani neighbourhood, the ICRC moved its offices to the newly built campus in Westlands, inaugurated by senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and ICRC headquarters in Geneva. Our new address: Ngecha Road off Lower Kabete Road.
